Where is Margarita Island?
Margarita Island (Isla de Margarita) is Venezuela’s largest Caribbean island, about 22 km off the country’s northeast coast. With Coche and Cubagua it makes up Nueva Esparta state, whose capital is La Asunción and largest city Porlamar. The island covers about 1,020 km²: two peninsulas joined by an 18 km isthmus, with some 171 km of coastline. Nueva Esparta had 491,610 people at the last census (2011).
There is no nonstop from the US to Margarita. American Airlines, the only US airline flying to Venezuela as of mid-October 2026, has two daily Miami–Caracas flights.[source][source]
From Caracas, connect to a domestic flight to Porlamar (PMV); Caracas airport reopened on September 1 from temporary terminals with Porlamar among its domestic routes.[source][source]
From November 26, 2026, Copa flies Panama City–Porlamar nonstop three times a week, so a connection through Panama is another route.[source][source]

The U.S. State Department rates Venezuela Level 3, “Reconsider Travel”, citing crime, kidnapping, terrorism, poor health infrastructure and natural disaster; the current advisory was issued June 27, 2026 and was still in force on October 26, 2026. Nueva Esparta (Margarita) is not among the areas it marks Do Not Travel. The UK advises against all but essential travel to the parts of Venezuela that include Margarita (updated October 14, 2026), and Canada advises avoiding all travel to Venezuela (updated October 13, 2026).
US citizens need a Venezuelan visa before they fly: since April 6, 2026, tourist and business visas for US nationals are applied for online as e-visas through Venezuela’s Foreign Ministry, and approved visas arrive by email.
The island is hot and dry: in Porlamar, average highs run from about 31 °C in January to 33 °C in September and the year’s rain is only about 527 mm. February to May is driest; most rain falls from June to December, peaking in August. The trade wind is strongest from about February to June, the core kitesurfing season at El Yaque.
